To study the host relationship and affinity between the varicella-zoster virus (VZV) and various kinds of cells in the lesion, the skin lesions of varicella and herpes zoster were observed with transmission electron microscope. The results showed that the host cells of VZV were of different kinds, which included epidermal cells, fibroblasts, endothelial cells and pericytes of the blood vessels in the dermis, Schwann's cells, macrophages and mast cells. Among them, the affinity of VZV with epidermal cells and fibroblasts was the strongest, and no host relationship with neutrophils and lymphocytes was found. The neutrophils showed an obvious phenomenon to phagocytose and digest VZV, and the macrophagea had role both in defending and spreading the viruses.
